April Foul

Tuesday, 1 April 1997

Snow. It snowed last night. March is supposed to go out like a lamb, not like a frozen chop. Sunday was beautiful, a tantalizing taste of spring, just to get our hopes up to be dashed by the return of winter.

I've resolved the DTD issue. Yanked out the "TOPMARGIN" and "LEFTMARGIN" everywhere, and the two WIDTH attributes on my home page. The home page still displays fine in both MSIE 3.01b1 and Netscape Navigator 3.0 (at least on the Mac), so I don't miss them. My pages now validate as correct according to the HTML 3.2+ experimental Document Type Definition, also known as "Cougar," which is why you'll see the following badge...

[ Valid HTML 3.2+ (Cougar)]

...in the lower right corner of each page.

I was thinking of doing something traditionally April-Foolish for today's Natter, but the only thing that came to mind was some sort of parody of the recent proclamation by the Union of Orthodox Rabbis, the one that stated that what Reform and Conservative Jews practice isn't Judaism. Something like "Orthodox Rabbis Claim American Nazi Party Not Really Nazis," or "...Michael Jackson Not Really Black." It would take more effort to do right than I have time to give, however.

On a more serious note, it has been a long time since I've been moved to feel pride over anything related to the religion of my ancestors. But with the elevation of intolerance to a virtue by the self-appointed guardians of the Jewish faith, to the point where their bigotry towards homosexuals and the intermarried causes them to turn against their own co-religionists, I am prouder than ever to be an atheist.

Note:

Actually, you won't see that badge anymore. It got to be too much of a pain to resubmit via web form each time I added a page or changed the layout, so now I just use my local copy of weblint in MacPerl. And, of course, this page was written at least two major site-design revisions ago.
